It’s basic economics: raise the price of your course without changing anything else, and you can expect fewer sales.

But what if you could raise the price and still sell the same amount?

No, it’s not a gimmick. All you need to do is add more value to the course - in the eyes of your customer. Whether you purchased a PLR course or spent the time to create one from scratch, the best way to make more sales while also raising the price is to increase the perceived value of your course.

"Value." Now there's a word that gets tossed around like a frisbee at the park. Hang in there though, since I’m going to focus on value as it specifically relates to your courses. Read on to learn how you can add value to your next online course and some of my favorite tactics to try out.

What Does It Mean to Add Value to a Course?

When I say "value", it's not about adding more content just for the sake of saying there is more.

I’m talking about delivering a more impactful experience for your students. Rather than focus on content on its own, focus on amplifying the result your students will get after taking the course.

For example, instead of a series of written modules, try adding videos to complement them. Or rather than simply having yourself on camera, invite a guest expert to join you for a module.

When you go the extra mile to keep your content updated, engaging, and impactful, you’ll have a course that shines out in the market instead of collecting dust on the digital shelf. It’s also a course you can charge more for!

How Value Impacts The Price of Your Course

It’s simple psychology. The more valuable your course feels, the more people will pay for it. That fact is right up there with other fundamental laws of nature - like what goes up must come down.

The price of your online course is important for a number of reasons, the most important of which is that the price sends a signal to your prospective customer about how valuable the course is.

But there is a lot more to pricing than what you would like to charge:

  • Your brand and experience: Your experience and brand are massive factors in how you price your courses. If you are a known expert, or at least can demonstrate expertise, then people will pay a premium to hear from you. Even if you do not have a book or never spoke at a conference, do not let that downplay the professional experience you built. It’s all in how you present it on your website and sales page.
  • The cost of making the course: This is a significant factor as well. You’re creating this course to make a profit, so knowing what the course costs you (either to create, outsource, or purchase) will help you determine the price you set.
  • Your target market: If you are selling B2B, the price point can be much higher than a consumer-level course. Businesses will spend a premium because they aren’t just buying the course, they are buying a solution to a problem that ultimately affects their bottom line.
  • Impact (Value!): Related to the above, the impact has a lot of sway on the price you can set. If your course can transform a business, save hours, or make someone money, then that course is worth a great deal more than the time you put into it. The greater the impact, the higher the price.
  • The type of course: There is a difference in perception and value between a brief email course and a one-on-one walkthrough. The type of course and level of value and access you provide will have a direct influence on price as well.

And of course, a lot of the above points go into the degree of magnitude you can add to the course and the value your course creates for your customer! If all this talk of pricing a course sounds like a foreign language, check out my ultimate guide to pricing an online course.

7 Ways to Add Value to Your Online Course

Remember: don’t add content for the sake of it. Explore ways to enhance the impact your course delivers for your students. Here are 7 tried-and-true value-adding tactics to use.

Add Bonuses and Resources Where Your Students Will Get Stuck

Got a spot in your course where students might trip up? Light up their path!

For example, many people get stopped in their tracks by something tech-related. In that case, add some tech tutorials or a done-for-you set-up service – like setting up their membership site platform or blog, ready for them to add to it. This goes the extra mile by providing an added layer of instruction or service for your students.

Create a Community for Your Students

Exceed expectations in your course by offering a personal touch. Some students may need extra motivation or learn better as a group. By creating a Facebook, Discord, or Slack Group for your students, you can provide a personal experience for each customer that goes far beyond a self-paced course.

Provide 1:1 Coaching

A surefire way to increase the value of your course is to offer one-on-one coaching support for your students. This provides a level of expertise that your customers could not get by taking a self-paced course, which is an immediate value-add that affects how successfully they’ll take action and implement what they learn. The higher the personal touch, the greater the individual results.

Make sure your schedule can support this though. Coaching calls go a long way in creating value, but they also go a long way toward filling up your calendar.

Offer a Live Q&A Session

Rather than simply end your course with an assessment, why not invite your students into a live Q&A session? This is an excellent way to gauge the progress of your students, understand the types of questions they will have after taking your course, and source live feedback.

Like coaching, this offers personal support, but in a one-to-many format which your calendar will appreciate.

Try Out Different Media Formats

Let’s face it, some of us are the "watch and learn" kind, while others love diving into a good read.

If you've got videos, how about throwing in transcripts? Got a killer presentation? Share those slides! Let them take a leisurely stroll through them. And if you’re serving up an ebook, jazz it up with some visual aids. By shaking things up, you're ensuring everyone gets a piece of the pie, making their learning journey deliciously rich.

Add Templates, Swipe Files - Anything Your Students Will Find Helpful

Courses are excellent, but there is nothing like practical tools and templates to get your students off the starting line faster. For example, templates or swipes for email starters are a big help in a list-building course. Adding optional advanced traffic generation strategies can add value to a content marketing course.

Invite Guest Instructors

It gets lonely creating a course all by yourself, so why not invite an instructor to the mix? The minute your students see there are multiple people involved in the creation and delivery of the course, the course’s value will increase in their eyes. Bonus points if your instructor is a well-known expert on the course topic!

Speed Up Your Course Creation by Purchasing a PLR Course

Now you’re probably wondering, all this talk of creating value sounds like a lot of hard work.

It can be. You have a trick up your sleeve through: brandable, done-for-you PLR content.

Our Shop is chock-full of done-for-you PLR courses and content that you can use to immediately add value to any course.

Browse around and add some PLR content to your next course. For example, you could use our customizable content for the following:

  • Short courses or parts of courses you can turn into videos. These could be added directly as a bonus module OR as a surprise bonus you mail about later
  • Worksheets, checklists, cheat sheets, and templates you can put in the course or add to a group, or as a webinar download
  • How-to-reports. A PDF bonus report can go anywhere at any time.

Remember what I said at the start… Don't throw in a kitchen sink full of content just for the sake of adding bonuses. Make sure they add something to the learning experience.

And head over to the Content Sparks shop to leverage our done-for-you courses, so you don't have to start from scratch ever again.
