FAQs: Can I Teach Business Coaching Skills?

Wondering if you should be teaching your audience coaching skills? Or whether you're qualified to teach business coaching?

Our Action-Based Coaching Skills course focuses on 1-to-1 business coaching, which is a perfect add-on or upsell to many of the other programs you're already teaching.

But your audience may not have the skills to be a really great coach, in which case offering coaching could do more harm than good!

Copy of FAQs About Business Coaching

That's why they need you to help them master the skills for working 1-to-1 with clients in a way that leads to breakthrough results. Combine something like an online course or simple infoproduct with individual coaching, and suddenly you get to see the incredible impact you can have.

In order to help you decide whether it's right for you to teach coaching, we're going to drill down to address your hopes, fears, and concerns around teaching business coaching skills.

My Audience Aren't Coaches or Interested in Coaching

There's this common myth that business coaching skills are only used by business coaches. Let's bust this myth. Anyone in a leadership role needs (and already) uses coaching skills. They might not call them coaching skills, but they're using them.

Anyone who supervises or manages other people will benefit from coaching skills. An online course helps join the dots together and adds those essential, additional skills to their resume. So, you're definitely able to help your audience, even if they're not coaches.

In fact, if you're teaching your audience any other kind of skill, then adding in 1-2-1 coaching is the perfect upsell for them to offer and fully meet the needs of their clients.

I'm Not a Coach

How you identify yourself doesn't matter. Your self-worth isn't attached to your role or title. You are no less "you" when you change a role. In reality, each role you perform takes a while to adjust to, and the skills you need to grow will gradually emerge. When you have coaching skills, they'll materialize sooner. You don't have to call yourself a coach to teach coaching; you just have to be ready to teach.

Let me take you back to your childhood science classes. Was your science teacher fun? Did they help you learn the fundamentals of science? Did you or your parents care that they weren't a physicist? A chemist? No? I didn't think so.

Teaching involves a different skill set to actually being a physicist, a historian, or artist.

You might not be a coach, but you can still teach coaching if you know you can help people.

I'm Not Certified in Coaching so I Can't Teach This

There are good coaches without certifications, and not-so-skilled coaches with certification. While getting a certification can help you feel confident in your abilities, it isn't essential. If you're worried about this being a sales objection to someone working with you, ask them why it's important to them. You'll often find they're hiding behind certification when they have a different objection but are not quite sure how to phrase it. Talk to your prospects and listen to what they're really saying.

No One Will Buy A Course About Coaching From Me

This is a mindset issue, and I'm glad you raised it. When marketing your coaching courses, you need to align your course with what your prospect needs. This means taking your thoughts from yourself for the moment, and thinking about what your prospect wants. Coaching skills are easier to sell when you align yourself with your audience's goals. If you already have courses for sale, it's not a huge leap to start teaching coaching skills as well.

Expect to talk to your potential coaching students multiple times, especially if they're seeing you in this capacity for the first time. Give them time to adjust, and then re-focus on your message.

Still not convinced anyone will buy a course about coaching from you?

Let me Introduce You to the Power of "Yet"

Whenever you hear yourself saying or thinking "No one will buy a course about coaching from me", add the word "yet" to the sentence. "No one will buy a course about coaching from me yet". Instead of talking yourself out of it, you are opening your mind to possibilities with the power of "yet".

Coaching is a Business

No. Wrong. No, no, no and no. Coaching is a SKILL.

Skills can be taught. Skills combined with other elements can become a business. Coaching is NOT a business. You will still need to have other elements in place to grow a business that involves coaching skills, such as your marketing, your branding, and your expertise. Coaching skills alone are not a business and if you continue to think like this you will fail to thrive.
