PLR vs MRR: What’s the Difference?

Looking to scale your coaching or consulting business with done-for-you content?

Smart choice! Before you press that checkout button, take a closer look at the product. No, not just what it contains or who made it. You need to pay close attention to the rights that the product gives you.

When purchasing done-for-you digital products, there are two main categories: MRR and PLR. I sell PLR products in my shop and will show you the differences and pros and cons between the two in this post.

What is PLR

PLR, or Private Label Rights, is a licensing agreement for digital products (eBooks, articles, checklists, or courses) that grants you the right to use, modify, and resell the product as if it were your own.

It’s entirely done-for-you white-label content that you can use for (almost) any purpose you’d like. This means that if you purchase a PLR course, you can sell it as your own to your customers. You can also modify it however you like to make sure it matches your tone and brand.

PLR licenses may come with some usage or resale restrictions, so it’s important to read the fine print when purchasing a product.

How PLR works

How PLR works

Using PLR is easy. You purchase a done-for-you product, modify it, and sell it to your audience. There are some particulars to be aware of with how PLR works, so let’s review the top things you need to know.

  • Choose a PLR product: Browse a PLR shop (like ContentSparks 😉) and make sure that there is a product that matches the interests of your audience and gives you a license to resell as your own.
  • Customize your PLR product: The beauty of PLR (compared to MRR, more on that later) is that you can customize your product. Rebrand it to match your company and add/remove content as needed.
  • Sell it as your own: Sell the product as your own to your audience. PLR is a fantastic way to add a new passive income stream to your coaching/services business.
  • Note licensing restrictions: Some PLR licenses may have limitations, such as prohibiting the resale of PLR rights, limiting where you can share it, requiring a minimum selling price, or restricting the number of copies that can be sold

And that’s it! Rather than spend hours creating content for your audience, in 15 minutes you could have a year’s worth of digital products to scale your business.

Pros and Cons of PLR

Now let’s quickly recap the “pros and cons” of using PLR to scale your business.

Pros of PLR

  • Saves you time: PLR allows you to quickly purchase content without spending time and resources on creation from scratch. This can significantly speed up product launches and marketing efforts.
  • Customizable: You can modify PLR content to fit your brand voice, target audience, and specific niche. This adaptability lets you create unique products tailored to your market.
  • Adds passive income stream: With PLR, you can repurpose a single piece of content into various formats (e.g., e-books, blog posts, videos), potentially creating multiple income sources from one initial investment.

Cons of PLR

  • Could be unoriginal if used as-is: Since PLR content is sold to multiple buyers, there's a risk that your offerings may not be unique in the market. The beauty of PLR though is that you can customize it however you’d like to have a unique product for your audience.
  • Quality concerns: The quality of PLR content can vary greatly. Some may be poorly written or outdated, requiring significant editing before use, which can negate the time-saving benefit. Fortunately, all the PLR products in my shop are edited, up-to-date, and follow instructional design best practices.

What is MRR?

Like PLR, MRR (Master Resale Rights) is a licensing agreement for using and selling digital products.

With MRR, not only do you get the right to sell the product to your audience, but you also can sell the resale rights to other marketers. In other words, they get to distribute the product as well.

MRR products typically come with a sales page and marketing materials, allowing you to immediately start promoting and selling them. Unlike PLR, MRR usually doesn't allow you to change the product in any way, which means your product will not be unique from the dozens (or hundreds) of identical versions out there.

How MRR Works

Like PLR, MRR works through a licensing agreement that allows you to purchase and resell the product (with a few key differences):

  • Purchase a product with MRR rights: First, purchase the product along with the Master Resale Rights from a shop. Often, you’ll get ready-made marketing materials like sales pages or promotional content.
  • You resell the product: You can sell the product directly to consumers, keeping 100% of the profits from these sales.
  • You offer reselling rights: You can also sell the resale rights to other marketers, creating a new revenue stream.
  • Restrictions: Unlike PLR, MRR typically doesn't allow any changes to the original product. The branding and content must remain intact. MRR might also cap the number of resellers to prevent oversaturation.

Like PLR, MRR allows you to purchase white-label digital products that can help scale your business. There are key restrictions that come with MRR that you need to be aware of.

Pros and Cons of MRR

Let’s quickly recap the “pros and cons” of using MRR to scale your business.

PROS AND CONS OF Master Resale Rights (MRR)

Pros of MRR

  • Adds multiple income streams: MRR allows you to profit from both direct product sales and selling resale rights, potentially increasing your overall revenue.
  • Ready-made products: MRR products typically come with pre-made sales materials, reducing the time and effort needed to start selling.

Cons of MRR

  • Market oversaturation: Popular MRR products can quickly flood the market, making it impossible to stand out and maintain profitable sales over time.
  • Limited customization options: Unlike PLR, MRR usually doesn't allow you to modify the product, restricting your ability to tailor it to your specific audience or brand.
  • Reduced uniqueness: Since many others may be selling the exact same product, it can be difficult to differentiate your offering and build a unique brand identity.

PLR vs MRR: Key Differences

While PLR and MRR can both be used by coaches/agency owners to sell digital products to their audiences, there are key differences you need to be aware of.

Here’s a quick recap of what you’ve learned so far:

PLR vs MRR: Key Differences

Legal Considerations of PLR and MRR

As we’ve covered, the key differences between PLR and MRR come down to the licensing agreements. There are a few other legal considerations you need to consider when deciding between a PLR and MRR product. These are:

  • Licensing agreements: PLR licenses typically grant more extensive modification rights, while MRR licenses focus on resale permissions without altering the original work.
  • Copyright laws: With PLR, the buyer often becomes the effective copyright holder of the modified content, while MRR maintains the original creator's copyright, with the buyer acting more as a licensed distributor.
  • Usage: PLR allows for broader usage, including rebranding and integrating content into other products, while MRR typically restricts usage to selling the product as-is or reselling the rights.
  • Distribution: You usually can’t distribute PLR product licenses (unless specified), while MRR often allows buyers to redistribute the product to someone else as well as sell it to their audience.
