How to Quickly Record and Edit Your Audio (for Free) with Audacity

Need to record some audio for a video, podcast, audio book, or other content? It doesn't have to be a technophobe's worst nightmare. In fact, I'm going to show you exactly how anyone can quickly and easily record and edit audio and get professional results.

I use a simple, free software called Audacity. And I'm definitely NOT a tech wizard. The key is to keep it simple and use a little advance planning.

Here's the video where I walk through a demo of how to use Audacity to record your audio and do a few important edits:

As a recap, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Download Audacity and open it up.
  2. Make sure you have a good microphone plugged into your computer and it's selected in the drop-down box.
  3. Have your notes or script ready to go.
  4. Hit the ‘record' button and wait for a couple seconds (to capture any background noise)
  5. Read or speak, making sure to pause wherever you know you'll need to cut something, or if you need to repeat something.
  6. Hit the ‘stop' button when you're done.
  7. Go back through your recording and cut out mistakes, ‘ums', deep breaths, or other unwanted bits.
  8. Highlight the blank space at the beginning and click on Effects > Noise Removal > Get Noise Profile.
  9. Go back and highlight the entire track. Then click on Effects > Noise Removal > Remove Noise
  10. Once you're happy with the entire recording, click on File > Export. Add any notes you want in the relevant spaces, such as author, title, and dates. Then save your new mp3 recording.

You now have a finished, publication-ready recording to use anywhere.

You can even do this for your audio in a presentation or training video. Just follow the steps in this blog post:
