How to Combine Courses to Create Series, Funnels, and Mash-Ups

“How do I combine courses to create new, unique offers?”

I get this question all the time. Since several customers just asked me recently, rather than send the same lengthy email again, I decided to write this article and create a video, and you get to benefit too!

Once you create a course, you unlock a new stream of passive income for your business. This is especially helpful for busy coaches, consultants, and agency owners – but it’s just the start. As you launch more courses, you can grow your revenue even faster by combining courses to create new products.

The ideas I show in the video can be applied in the same way to any products that have common themes or topics. Alternatively, try out the ideas on general topics and then drill down to more specific ones. Read on as I give you the full breakdown and start scaling your business this year!

Why Combine Courses For New Offers? 4 Reasons

Creating courses, combining offers – is it really worth the effort? You bet.

Here are four reasons that coaches and consultants should seriously consider combining courses for new offers and funnels:

  • Maximize your existing products: You can get more mileage from existing content by repurposing it in different ways. This allows you to get more value from the investment in a single course or a handful of products that you start with.
  • Create offers for all levels: Combining courses provides you with various offerings for students at all levels. For example, a few intro-level courses could be combined into one large offer for more advanced learners.
  • More options to monetize: By combining offers or transforming the same content into lead magnets, paid products, or bonuses, you can open up new opportunities to monetize the products you already have.
  • Super-simple funnels: Combining offers allows you to easily build marketing and sales funnels on your website. Whether it’s a free lead magnet, a low-ticket offer, or a premium course.

3 Ways to Combine Courses to Create New Offers For Your Business

3 Ways to Combine Courses to Create New Offers For Your Business

There are three main ways to combine courses to create new offers:

  • Combining the courses as-is in a series
  • Creating different types of sales funnels
  • Doing a ‘mash-up' or longer course by mixing content from different products

I’ll walk you through each one next.

Create a Course Series

Creating a series is the simplest approach to combining courses, and an excellent place to start if you’re newer to this. By keeping the courses as-is, you can combine them in a series to build a premium, comprehensive offer for your audience.

For example, a shorter course introducing content marketing concepts could serve as the first step, followed by a more detailed course focusing on content creation techniques.

Because you’re not really changing the content much, this approach requires minimal reorganization and gives you an excellent starting point. The key is to ensure there is a natural progression and flow from course to course in the series.

Create a Sales Funnel

Sales funnels allow you to automate your lead capture and sales process, and you can easily combine courses and info products to build them. I have three ways to do it:

  • 1. Use a shorter course as a lead magnet (delivered as a webinar or email series) that directs subscribers to your paid products or premium services offerings.
  • 2. Use a specific bonus resource (like a guide with inspiring content ideas) as the lead magnet, which feeds into a shorter course as a paid product. This is an easy way to get leads in the door and start selling right away, but it also allows you to position your comprehensive course as a premium upsell.
  • 3. Use an opt-in report from the comprehensive course as the lead magnet, while offering the shorter course as a bonus for purchasers.

However you slice it, you can combine the courses and info products on your digital shelf in creative ways to capture leads from your website, sell products, and feed them into your higher-ticket offers.

Create a “Mash-up”

Ready for something a bit more advanced?

A “mash up” is where you break apart courses and combine them into entirely new offers. This takes a bit more thinking and effort, but it can be well worth it.

I like to use mind mapping software (and even post-it notes) to visualize the components from multiple courses and reorganize them. Make sure to thoroughly review each course (including the supporting materials) to understand the flow and how they could be split up and put back together. When putting the courses together, you may want to consider varying delivery formats (video, email, webinar) for different sections to keep engagement high.

While mashups create something truly unique, they require more work, so make sure you’re up for the challenge.

The products I used in my examples are Content Creation Mastery (sorry - no longer available) and Magnetic Content, both of which sound similar but deal with different aspects of content creation.

A Few Tips for Combining Products

If you’re scratching your head wondering how to get started, don’t worry. Just follow these tips:

  • Look at the product ‘Contents’ pdf (in the Instructor Materials, if available) and open each folder to see what materials you have to work with.
  • Review the ‘Summary Checklist' or ‘Cheat Sheet’ in each product so you know what it covers BEFORE you do any specific planning.
  • Use shorter courses to lead into larger ones, or as a bonus to a larger one.
  • Use shorter courses or bonus tools/checklists/reports/etc as different list-building freebies. Then follow up with promotion of the longer product.
  • Make a big list of the modules and key points covered in each course on one mind map or on post-it notes. Then rearrange them in an order that makes sense to you.
  • Be sure to look for places where you need to create something new or take out pieces your audience doesn't need
  • When in doubt, use the content as-is and just edit for your branding and language. Start simple and work your way up to more advanced mash-ups.
