How to Create a ‘Hand-Drawn’ Effect in PowerPoint

Love whiteboard videos? Me too! Did you know that you can create a similar effect in PowerPoint with a couple of their built-in animations?

There are a few great programs out there for creating whiteboard videos, but if you just want to do a little bit of animating, you can do it directly in PowerPoint.

In the following video, I demonstrate how you can use the “wheel” animation and the “appear” animation to make it look as if some graphics and text and hand-written onto the screen.

No, there's no actual “hand” involved, like in a whiteboard video, but that can be distracting at times.

Take a look at the demo and then play around with some basic graphics and text animation yourself. Just don't overdo it by including too much animation!

NOTE: There are two links I mentioned in the video:

==> Presenter Media

==> Branding 101: Design and Market Your Brand

Presenter Media is where I got the theme I used in the slide presentation in the video demo. Branding 101 is the course I created that was promoted in that presentation.

  1. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but
    I find this topic to be actually something that I think I would never understand.
    It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me.
    I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!

    1. You CAN get the hang of it. I felt the same way as you when I first looked at animations, but once you play around with them a bit you’ll get more comfortable. Try it out 🙂

  2. Great training video, Sharyn! Figuring out all the options in PowerPoint can be tricky, but you explained exactly what we need to create that effect. Thanks so much! Can’t wait to try it!

    1. You’re welcome, Susan! I actually figured that one out by looking at the way it was done in the template from Presenter Media. Then I reverse-engineered it 😉

    1. Kate, I wish I could say I’m clever, but I actually just figured it out from the template I was using!

  3. Thank you for this, Sharon! You are SO clever. I’m just getting started with PowerPoint, and it’s all because of your tutorial videos. You help me see what’s possible and how easy it can be to create something that’s stellar. Kudos! and Thanks!

    1. Kudos to you, Debra! I love PowerPoint 2010 and all the things you can do with it. It’s made it so much easier to make videos 🙂
