How to Find Content for a Membership Site

Membership sites are a proven way to scale your coaching business and build a stream of passive income… but then you need to find content to attract and engage your members.

How are you going to manage that?

Whether you team up with experts in your field, create content in-house, or outsource it, there are many to find high-quality content to fill your membership site. In this article, I’ll show you the best ways to find content, and how to make sure your membership site is as profitable as possible.

Top Tips to Generate and Manage Content for Your Membership Site

What Type of Content Works Best for Membership Sites

The beauty of a membership site is it’s so flexible that you can use just about any type of content you’d like.

Whatever content you choose will ultimately depend on your audience, their problems, and how you feel you can best solve those problems. Make sure to focus on providing high-value, exclusive content that your members can't find easily elsewhere.

Here are four of my favorite types of content to use with a membership site:

  • Courses: Online courses can be sold individually or packaged together to be part of a membership site. These are terrific for sharing your expertise and adding value in one go for your audience.
  • In-depth tutorials and how-to guides: Think of these as the “younger sibling” of online courses. In-depth tutorials and practical, step-by-step guides go deep into one specific topic. You can make them exclusive by only making them available to members rather than posting them on your website, social media, or YouTube.
  • Downloadable resources like templates, checklists, and worksheets: Content you might use for lead magnets (like checklists, planners, and other handy resources) are also great value-adds for your membership site. When bundled with courses, you have ample content to share with your audience and keep them engaged and motivated.
  • Live Q&A sessions or group coaching calls: While the goal of a membership site is to scale your offerings, a live component adds tremendous value. Especially in this day and age, when so much content lacks a human ‘face’ behind it. By offering a monthly coaching call or live Q&A, you can provide a consistent stream of personal engagement for members with minimal effort on your part.

This is just the start!

Get creative with the content you create or source for your membership site. When in doubt, remember that your goal is to create content that solves problems and delivers value for your customers. Surveys, polls, and old-fashioned conversations are a great way to discover pain points and potential topics for the content you provide.

So where will you source the content for entire courses? I’ll cover that next.

Ways to Consistently Generate Content for a Membership Site

A steady flow of new customers to your membership site is great in theory, but that content needs to come from somewhere.

Once you launch a membership site, you need to consistently provide valuable content to attract and retain your members (aka that dreaded ‘churn’.)

Here are a few of my favorite sources for content:

  • Create and launch courses yourself: If you want to feature courses on your membership site, then you can start right away by creating a course yourself. Be warned though, creating online courses can quickly become expensive (I have a hack for you at the end of this list).
  • Invite guest experts: Add a bit of variety (and content you don’t need to create) by collaborating with industry experts to create exclusive content for your members. For example, you can partner with experts to create exclusive interviews or webinars to provide more value to your members.
  • Encourage member contributions: Your customers can be a great source of content! Build a community where your members can share their experiences, case studies, and insights. This will keep them engaged with minimal input from you (aside from responding and moderation).
  • PLR: This is my favorite tip and the best “hack” for sourcing quality content fast. PLR (private label rights) allows you to purchase and rebrand content to sell to your audience. From PLR courses to PLR lead magnets and more, there is no shortage of products you can purchase.

Now that you have ways to source high-quality content, let’s talk about my favorite ways to manage content for a membership site:

  • Develop a content calendar: Plan your content topics and formats in advance to ensure a consistent publishing schedule.
  • Repurpose existing content: Double up your blog posts, podcasts, or videos into new formats like infographics, slide decks, or workbooks.
  • PLR (again): If the thought of managing a content calendar or going through the trouble of repurposing your content gives you a headache - try PLR. With PLR content, you can source content in minutes instead of hours. That means you could have a year’s worth of content stocked up and ready to launch in an afternoon!

Whether you create the content yourself or use PLR, you’ll still need to release it to your members regularly. Next, I’ll show you my favorite tools for managing a content calendar.

Tools to Manage a Content Calendar for a Membership Site

Managing a year’s worth of content can be daunting, so here are a few of my favorite tools to plan out the publishing and release process:

  • Trello: Trello helps you organize content ideas and assign tasks in a board view that makes it easy to know where every project stands.
  • CoSchedule: This all-in-one content marketing platform includes an editorial calendar, social media scheduling, and team collaboration features.
  • Asana: Asana is a classic choice for project management, and for good reason. Like Trello, it allows you to organize tasks across your team in one powerful platform.

When planning content for your membership site, focus on tools that speed up your workflow rather than slow you down. When in doubt, the simplest tool is best.

How to Make Sure Your Membership Site is Profitable

How to Make Sure Your Membership Site is Profitable

By now you know where to source content for your membership site and how to manage your calendar. Here are three tips to make sure your membership site is profitable:

  • Build your audience before you launch
  • Set the right price
  • Manage costs with PLR

Build Your Audience Before You Launch

Membership sites can make money, but they require upfront investment to get started.

You need to:

And I’m just getting started.

The easiest way to set your membership site up for success is to have an audience you launch it to. Having an audience of people who already know, like, and trust you makes it infinitely easier to build up your customer base early on and begin generating a profit. Check out my guide to building an audience for an online course for tips.

Set the Right Price

Pricing is a bit art, a bit science, and a dash of magic thrown in for good measure.

Pricing a membership site can be a daunting task, but before you get overwhelmed, here are a few quick tips to make it easier:

  • Lean into recurring revenue - this will give you a steady and scalable stream of new customers each month to grow your coaching business.
  • Make your pricing clear. As the adage goes “If you confuse then you lose.”
  • Mix in a monthly and annual subscription. Annual subscriptions will give you quick revenue boosts and help lock in new customers.
  • Focus on value. It doesn’t matter if you have one course or a dozen. Focus on the value your membership site provides to customers.

Source Content Efficiently with PLR

Creating content for your membership site will be one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) cost driver. To keep your members active and eager to stay subscribed, you’ll need a steady stream of fresh content to engage them.

PLR (Private Label Rights) is a license for content that allows you to purchase and resell under your name and brand (similar to white label). You can purchase a dozen or so courses and quickly customize and rebrand them - giving you a year’s worth of content with little more than a weekend’s worth of work.

Don’t let time or costs hold you back from launching a membership site that propels your coaching business to multiple six figures!

Fill Your Membership Site With High-Quality Content Today!

Sourcing all this content can take a lot of work, but I have a shortcut for you: PLR.

PLR (private label rights) content is content that you can rebrand and sell as your own.

When you purchase a license to any of our ready-to-go course kits, you get the rights to edit it any way you want (or leave it as-is) and add your own name and branding.
