How to choose a course topic

How to Choose a Course Topic

Choosing a course topic takes a bit more effort than picking one out of a hat.

If you’re new to the world of online courses, I recommend following these steps to narrow down the course topics you choose from:

  • Define your audience: Start by defining a niche for your audience. If you have existing customers (perhaps coaching/consulting clients), then use them as a frame of reference. Buyer personas/Ideal Customer Profiles are helpful here to keep you focused. Remember: marketing to everyone is marketing to no one
  • List out their problems: Once you have a clear audience, take time to list out their needs and challenges If possible, speak directly with customers or use surveys to collect feedback from a larger audience.
  • Look for gaps in the market: The best course topic you can choose is one your competitors are missing. Focus on what competitors don't offer and look for opportunities to differentiate yourself. This won’t make sales “automatic,” but it will make sales a lot easier.
  • Brainstorm solutions: Once you’ve narrowed down the unmet problems your audience has, start brainstorming potential topics (or review topics in the mega list below). I recommend you focus on your areas of expertise first before branching out to new topics.
  • Rank by value: You want to make money, right? Just checking. Once you have a list of solid topics, rank them by least to most valuable. You’ll obviously want to choose a topic from the “most valuable” side as that will lead to bigger sales and a more successful launch.

This should be a good primer on choosing a course topic, but check out my complete guide for a deeper dive. Now that you have a helpful framework for choosing a topic let’s get to my master list of topics you can choose from.

A Few Course Topic Brainstorming Tips if You Get Stuck

This big list of course topics should give you a major head start on choosing one for your audience, but if you’re still unsure between two topics, I have a few more tips for you.

Remember, it’s not all dollars and cents (or whatever currency you use!) There are a few things to consider while brainstorming your course ideas.

Choose topics that align with your brand and expertise

When in doubt, start with what you know!

If you run a social media agency, then look at topics that fall under what you do for your clients rather than try to venture into something unrelated, like email marketing or SEO. Not only does this make it easier to create the course (you already know the material!), but you have a ready and willing audience who knows, likes, and trusts you in your field and will likely be happy to buy your course.

Look at What Course Topics Are Already Generating Revenue

Already selling courses?

Start with what has been the most successful at selling so far. Sifting through market trends or what your competitors are doing can provide useful insights, but when in doubt, go with what works (and your gut). As a bonus, this allows you to bundle courses together into an online curriculum (which means higher-ticket offers!).

Choose Something You Are Passionate About

Creating an online course can be hard work – so make it an experience you look forward to every day by choosing a topic that excites you.

Passion will be your main source of motivation (and fuel), so pick a topic that makes the process of creating the course as enjoyable as possible. Not only does this make creating your course easier, but your enthusiasm will carry over to your students.

Make Sure There Is Demand for The Topic

Most importantly, make sure you are brainstorming topics that are in demand from your audience. You can gauge interest by regularly speaking with your customers or running a survey, but tools like Google Trends or SEO tools can show how much interest there is for a topic. If you correctly follow my process above, you should have no problem here!

Bear these tips in mind and there is no stopping you from adding a six-figure income stream to your business without constantly worrying if you’re on the right track!

Grow Faster with PLR Courses

You have the topic, but creating a course that sells is a whole different ballgame.

If you have loads of time to brainstorm problems to solve and test out different products, by all means, go for it! But most coaches, consultants, and agency owners find they have too little time and not too much.

If you’re one of those folks, I have a secret for you: PLR. PLR stands for Private Label Rights; it’s a license that allows you to purchase a ready-to-sell product, rebrand it, customize it, and then sell it as your own.

It’s the ultimate head start on launching a series of digital products that can propel your business to new heights. And I sell dozens of PLR courses, eBooks, workbooks, and more in my shop.

Scale Your Business Faster with a Free PLR Product

If you’re ready to scale your business faster with an online course, then get ready for an extra-special offer: I’m giving away one free PLR product every month.

Every month I offer a new PLR product for free that you can use right away to start scaling your business. Thanks to the magic of repurposing, this free PLR product might give you a few new offers, too.
